Death of Marco Simoncelli

If you're reading this, your probably aware of the death of MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli, who tragically died on the 23rd of October 2011.

Simoncelli was navigating through turn 11 on Lap 2 barely 4 minutes into the race at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia when he lost balance and began to veer into the track while 9/10 times the bike would've moved out. To his misfortune, he veered right into the paths of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi. Both of whom tried with all their might to avoid crashing into the sliding Simoncelli. But their attempts seemed futile and they crashed directly into Marco Simoncelli whose helmet was knocked off in the course of the accident. Colin Edwards took a spill and dislocated his left shoulder while Valentino managed to stay on the bike without any physical damage. While a helmetless Marco lay on the track motionless, face first. The race was immediately Red Flagged and Marco Simoncelli was taken to a medical facility where he succumbed to his injuries. The official cause of death was "Severe Trauma To The Head, Neck and Chest."

At the age of 24, raw talent and a fighting spirit to match, Simoncelli was touted to the next poster boy of MotoGP after Valentino Rossi for his flamboyant hair and exuberant personality. But someone wanted all the good ones this year, from Steve Jobs to Dan Wheldon to Marco. The year has been a painful one for all of us. Many greats have been taken away and 2 under unnatural circumstances who died while doing what they loved most.

My heart goes out to the Simoncelli family, the Gresini Honda Team, the MotoGP paddock, Marco's fans and most importantly Colin and Valentino themselves. Sure, Simoncelli might've experienced excruciating pain for an hour but these two men must live with the guilt of thinking that they must've been a reason for the death of Marco Simoncelli. More so in the case of Valentino, they hung out, joked together, trained together and were both Italians. Simoncelli once said that he wished Rossi would solve his issues at Ducati so that they could race together at every GP, such was the respect that Marco held for Valentino.

All that remains now are memories. Memories of all the podiums, the exuberant hair, the aggressive riding, the tall frame which barely fit in the confines of his motorcycle. But one image will forever live on in the minds of everyone who witnessed the horrific crash. The sight of one of the most lively characters in the MotoGP circuit lying lifeless on the Sepang Track.

The incident is a grim reminder of how precious life is and how vulnerable it is even it times when we least expect it. None can be solely blamed for this catastrophe, we can only hope Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi find it in their hearts and minds to think the same.

Here you will see Marco's right hand stuck under Rossi front tyre while his left leg is still on his bike while his right leg is under his bike. His left arm is invisible and the location of his head at this point of time is easy guessable.

Though notorious in the beginning of the season for causing accidents with Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo, Marco Simoncelli's death is a great loss for the world of motorsport. His charisma was infectious on track as it was off of it.

Ironically, when asked if he was afraid of dying in an accident, Simoncelli apparently responded: "No. You live more for five minutes going fast on a bike like that, than other people do in all of their life."
